SOHO GALLERY MAKES STATEMENT WITH NEW SITE BY MEDIAPOLIS
World-renowned Sperone Westwater Launches Site Documenting Its 27 Years

NEW YORK -- Sperone Westwater Gallery, one of the oldest and most respected galleries on the contemporary art scene, has launched a new site, speronewestwater.com, built by Manhattan-based Web engineering company Mediapolis, inc. The site, which presents information about artists and exhibitions through out the gallery's twenty seven years of operation, features thousands of images of art. Perhaps the most innovative feature on the site is the extensive cross-referencing that relates works to artists and to exhibitions.

"The idea is to use the power of the Web to tell the story about the gallery and its amazing history," said Mediapolis principal Carl Pritzkat. "We want to go past just presenting the artwork online; we want visitors to see the rich creative context in which this art is presented."

Sperone Westwater Fischer originated in 1975, when Italian art dealer Gian Enzo Sperone, American Angela Westwater, and German art dealer Konrad Fischer opened an exhibition space in Soho, New York. (In 1982 the gallery's name was changed to Sperone Westwater). The original goal of the gallery was to showcase European artists who had little or no recognition in the United States along with American painters and sculptors to whom the three founders were committed. 27 years later, the gallery continues to exhibit a wide range of artists - senior, as well as "cutting edge", of varying nationalities, ages and styles.

The site uses Mediapolis's Iowa® content management system for its operation. Iowa automatically creates the cross-references which are such an important part of the site experience, and Iowa lets gallery staff update the site through a browser-based edit screen without need for technical knowledge.

Mediapolis (www.mediapolis.com ) creates technology that simplifies the production of high profile, high performance Web sites. Since 1994, Mediapolis has used the Iowa® Software Suite to build more than 150 sites for clients including Sony Music, BMG Entertainment and Johnson & Johnson.
